Job Description Job Summary: The Histotechnologist collects and prepares tissue specimens for complex and specialized tests to confirm a patient diagnosis. Responsibilities: Participates in the evaluation of new techniques and procedures in the laboratory. Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis. Provides instruction in theory, technical skills, safety protocols, and application of laboratory test procedures. Performs continuing education for laboratory personnel and maintains technical competence. Acts as an administrative and technical resource for laboratory testing. Prepares standards, reagents, and other materials (including patient specimens) for testing. Following established procedures, prepares tissues for examination by pathologist by treating with chemicals, embedding tissues, sectioning on a microtome, mounting on glass slides and staining. Freezes, cuts, and stains frozen sections for rapid diagnosis. Performs special stains and special procedures such as mammography x:ray of tissue and lymph node dissection. Performs routine and special staining with accuracy and knowledge of histochemistry and follows control process procedures to recognize appropriate staining reactions. Utilizes knowledge and skills of histologic technique to process, embed, cut and stain tissue specimens. Qualifications Licenses/Certifications/Registration: Required Credential(s): Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or other nationally recognized certification examination within one year of transfer/hire date required. Education: Bachelors degree from a regionally accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics, and successful completion of an accredited Histotechnologist program required, or one year of full time experience in a histopathology laboratory under the supervision of a Pathologist required Work Experience: None required with the proper education/certification outlined separately. One year of clinical laboratory experience preferred.
